Hello to everyone interested in the Basset Fauve de Bretagne.  We are very happy that you have found us and our dogs, Remy and Sofie.

“We” are Mark and Nancy, a couple living in the San Francisco Bay Area.  The path that lead us to these marvelous dogs is an interesting story, which I will attempt to tell in an abbreviated fashion.

Mark has always had dogs.  About ten years ago he was looking at a European dog book and read about a breed that he had never heard of before.  Hardy and affectionate, rough coated, long and low, described as a great family dog, he immediately was drawn to the description of their character as well as their distinctive and unusual appearance.

Fast Forward to January 2004.  As his Australian Shephard was fading, he began thinking about a new companion.  Having never forgotten the charming Fauve, he now can and does use the power of the internet.  Employing this new tool, combined with

a fortuitous chance conversation at a dog show, he discovers one of the two breeders in the US.  Amazingly, this breeder has a six month male that she has been waiting to place as she wants the dog to have the opportunity to breed.  With the promise that Mark will try to make that happen, “Remy” is put on a plane and arrives at SFO early February 2004.  He immediately begins his mission of stealing hearts and turning heads all over the Bay Area.

Personality?  You gotta see it to believe it!  So, Mark decides the only thing that could be better than one Fauve is two and returns to the computer to find a suitable girlfriend for the young prince.  Realizing the scarcity of Fauves in the US, we decide that searching in Europe will be the best avenue, adding new DNA to the limited US gene pool.  We find Sabine Geschine, a breeder In Hamburg.  She had three female Fauves  and one of them was just coming into season....Bingo!  We asked that she reserve a female suitable for breeding, and we booked ourselves a trip to Europe for two and a return trip for three.

When Sofie joined the family in November of 2005, the Fauve magic increased exponentially.  Walking them is a process that is constantly interrupted by exclamations of “Oh my goodness, what are those cute dogs??”  The discovery that they are great with all people, including small children, social with other dogs and just generally completely delightful lead us to the desire to “share the love”.  So here we are with a litter due early March 2008.

Please go to our photo page to view Sofie’s progress and puppy photos when they arrive.  We will be updating the page regularly.
